A place of peace and remembrance
The Irish National War Memorial Gardens at Islandbridge is one of the most beautiful commemorative sites in Europe. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the gardens honor the 49,400 Irish soldiers who died in World War I.
The gardens were begun in 1931 and completed in 1939, featuring formal lawns, rose gardens, and memorial rooms containing Harry Clarke's illustrated volumes listing the names of the fallen.
Sir Edwin Lutyens, who also designed the Cenotaph in London, created these gardens with characteristic attention to detail. The sunken rose garden, the fountain areas, and the granite bookrooms all reflect his masterful approach to commemorative design.
The gardens are particularly beautiful at sunset, when the light creates a peaceful, reflective atmosphere perfect for contemplation.
